Maternity Floral Knit Dress

Is it just me or is there a dearth of good maternity sewing patterns out there?  At a time of life when your body is defying all the laws of gravity, it seems a real necessity to be able to sew clothes for your ever-changing voluptuousness.

I made a few tops and dresses from some self-drafted patterns but my FAVORITE maternity creation is this dress.

The pattern is this one…

1360

Simplicity 1360 which I found on Etsy for dirt cheap (last I checked there were oodles still available for about $5).

It was so cute and flattering-looking that I couldn’t wait to try it.

Ok, sure…it still kinda looks like a tent from the side but that’s kinda par for the course with flowy maternity dresses, amiright?

I used some ponte knit that I got in a Knit Fix bag from Girl Charlee Fabrics.  Have you heard about their Knit Fix?  It’s an exclusive bag they release monthly with 6 different 2 yard cuts of knit fabric not available anywhere or anytime else! They’re super fun to order (and more than slightly addicting).

Anyway, this coral floral just called to me to be made into a pretty spring dress and I’m thrilled with how it turned out!

And can we talk for a second about this front detail?

Soooo cute, and shockingly easy to put together.  One of the simplest commercial patterns I’ve ever made.

The only thing I’d do differently next time is try to cut the front skirt piece on the fold instead of as 2 separate pieces so that I didn’t have a seam right down the middle of the dress (although the gathering mostly hides it).

I also wished I’d sized down at least once from the measurements listed since I had to end up taking it in under the bust and the sleeves were a bit wide.  Other than that, I just raised the neckline a smidge.

Overall a win: flowy, flattering and (most importantly) extremely comfortable.  Like, I could sleep in this thing (and may or may not have).  And considering this bad boy cost me less than $20 to make, I’m thinking about trying my hand at a non-maternity version.  That is, if I ever have this baby 😉

I bought that same pattern for $1 at Hobby Lobby on Saturday! I was worried if I would have enough fabric out of my KnitFix to make it. Thanks for sharing! It’s a beautiful dress!
